The causes of hunger are complex. Hunger is most often caused by economic insecurity. Many people in Washington state are just one lay off, missed paycheck or medical emergency away from hunger. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased food insecurity in our state.

Use of food assistance and food banks rose significantly in the state during the COVID-19 pandemic

30% of Washington households that receive SNAP benefits (food stamps) have children
