While we send loads to food banks across the country, here in Washington we have two members with whom we provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables for the 1 in 7 Washingtonians facing food insecurity.
During Fall 2017 one of those members, Second Harvest Inland Northwest, received carrot and peach donations from our suppliers Grimmway Farms and Conrad & Adams respectively. Second Harvest distributed these items at their Mobile Market distributions in communities across Eastern Washington and North Idaho.
Second Harvest fills a refrigerated truck with food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat, bread, cereal and other staples and takes it to a high-need neighborhood or community.
The Mobile Market visits a church parking lot, school, community center or other location and in just a couple of hours, volunteers help distribute up to 8,000 pounds of food to about 250 households. This is a key strategy for getting more fresh produce onto the plates of vulnerable children, families and seniors, who do not regularly eat the standard recommended servings of fruits and vegetables because they cannot afford them.
Thanks to our donors for their generosity! We look forward to continuing to partner with our member Second Harvest to feed our neighbors in need.
