While summer often marks the start of the fresh harvest season, for many children summer and the school break mean an increase in their food insecurity. For students who receive free and reduced meals at school, summer can bring empty plates and stomachs. This June, our partners at Feeding Texas, with the generous support of H-E-B, joined together to combat this issue.
“One in six Texas households struggles to avoid hunger, and during summer break the need for food grows,” said Danny Flores, H-E-B Public Affairs Manager. “As the state’s largest food retailer, H-E-B is committed to supporting our communities and helping families in need with the necessary resources to avoid hunger this summer.”
In support of this effort, Feeding Washington worked with our apple growers to supply 15 trailer loads of apples to 16 Texas food banks and the clients they serve.
Jose Campuzano, Director of Supply Chain Produce for Feeding Texas, recognized this contribution. “On behalf of our entire Feeding Texas team we want to extend our upmost and most sincere appreciation to your collaborative work in our initiative to have Washington Apples being donated to our Texas food bank network.”
Congratulations to Feeding Texas and H-E-B on the continued success of their Food Bank Assistance Program!
